Professional Counseling Approach

The Faithful Surrender Approach

I am classically trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I have specialized training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I typically operate from an ACT approach and emphasize action-focused counseling, but call upon other modalities as needed.

I am founded in a human centered approach to counseling, which advocates for the inherent self-ability to grow and heal. Additionally, I fundmanetally believe that every person is a valuable creation and is worthy of love and support. As such, I take a more informal approach to counseling which emphasizes establishing a relational environment that fosters your growth.

I meet you as an equal. While I have specialized training and expertise, I am not the expert in you. Thus we must work together to effectuate meaningful change in your life as you so desire.

Bringing God into treatment - what does this mean?

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

image_edited.jpg

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a modern, evidence-based approach founded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Rather than challenging problematic thoughts and behaviors, or even labelling them as good or bad,

ACT prioritizes value-based action and adopts the simple evaluation of whether a thought, behavior or action is helpful or unhelpful. Thus we will never debate whether something is wrong or right, good or bad, etc. We will focus on whether something you are engaging with or doing is helping you move towards the person you want to be or away from the person you want to be.

What is action-focused counseling?

Action-focused counseling is intuitively what is sounds like. Rather than simply sitting and talking, my approach prioritizes teaching by tapping into our physical action - thus, tapping into our natural processing abilityl. This may include activities in the counseling session, or self-guided activities between session, or a combination of both. It will ultimately be curtailed to your needs.

This also can include engaging in therapy while working together in other activities, like walking, hiking, catch, frisbee, corn hole, horseshoes, hitting a golf ball or anything else. This approach calls upon the most basic conclusion in human growth - we learn best through experience.

Experientials - A new, intuitive kind of approach

An experiential package is an opportunity to engage in activities that a typical therapy session may not a lot opportunity for. It can also serve to complete the therapeutic process in a shorter, more intentional period of time. Instead of doing weekly sessions for four months, for instance, we may do 20 hours of therapy over the course of a week. Each experiential strategy is individualized and unique to your needs and may look different than this example. Experiential can be used to replace any treatment that standard therapy would be used for.

This can be a supplemental step to ongoing treatment, or the sole focus of our therapeutic relationship. Experientials provide us an opportunity to work together to target specific, problematic behaviors, thoughts and feelings and emphasize experience-based learning. An experiential package may not be right for everyone nor every situation, so if you are interested, it will be something that we discuss and agree upon together.
