The Story Behind Faithful Surrender

Kaleb Martin

Licensed Professional Counselor

Founder, Faithful Surrender Counseling

Veteran, United States Marine Corps

Be who you were created to be, unapologetically.

My name is Kaleb Martin. In my lifetime, I have been many things, but no title have I been prouder to bear than Husband and Father. I discovered a love for mentoring and teaching as a teenager, while my desire to support and serve others began even earlier. Eventually this culminated into my pursuit of counseling after I, myself, experienced firsthand struggles with depression and the relief that many approaches to therapy promised but never fully delivered.

After years of struggle, pain, and anger - cyclical depression, broken relationships, and feeling out of control - I finally found a pathway to true healing. While I was in graduate school, I experienced a moment that I call my "spiritual uppercut". In that moment, I recognized that my fears and hesitancies towards religion were based on what men have made of religion, not what Christianity itself teaches.

Faith isn't about the practices of man, but about relationship with God.

Jesus is The Way.

I was ravenous for more, and my eyes began to open. The man I am today exists only because I have learned to rely on God rather than myself—a pursuit I expect to continue for the rest of my life.

The same transformation that reshaped my life became the foundation for how I understand counseling. I help people identify and remove the barriers that keep them trapped in fear, shame, unhealthy beliefs, and destructive patterns. My hope is that, in doing so, they become increasingly able to receive the healing and relationship with God for which they were created.

Healing necessarily cannot be separated from the one who heals.

This belief shapes every area of my work, including individual treatment and marriage/relationship counseling. Marriage is sacred and ought to be approached with reverence. Do you approach your marriage with reverence, or have complacency and self-interest quietly taken root?

Similarly, life is valuable. Every life. You were created with intentionality and bestowed with value and purpose. When you approach life, are you stepping into this God given value with the decisions that you make, or are you living according to patterns you've learned through fear, pain, and the culture around you?

Submitting to God is returning the weight of responsibility back upon the One who can bear it.

Oh, and you were never meant to do it alone. Whether you're taking your first step toward healing or returning after years of struggle, it would be an honor to walk alongside you.

My Story

My first real experience with mental health wasn’t as a therapist — it was as a Marine.

While serving in the Marine Corps, I was diagnosed with depression and related challenges. What made that season especially difficult wasn’t only what I was facing internally — it was feeling unheard. I did not receive the support I needed from those responsible for my care. I know what it’s like to ask for help and feel sidelined.

That experience redirected my life.

After leaving the Marines, I explored several paths — including work in a schizophrenia research lab — but I kept returning to one conviction: I wanted to sit across from people in real time. I wanted to be present in the room where healing either begins or is avoided.

From a young age, I’ve understood what it feels like to have unmet needs. To feel isolated. To wrestle internally while appearing steady on the outside. That tension — between who we are, what we’ve experienced, and who we long to become — is deeply human.

My work is shaped by that understanding.

If you are someone who has felt dismissed, sidelined, or misunderstood in your struggle, I take that seriously. It is an honor to be invited into the healing process of another's life, and I treat it as such.

My Philosophy

Therapy is not about fixing you.

It is a relationship — structured, intentional, and honest. My role is not to rescue, debate right and wrong, or create dependency. It is to help you see clearly.

I hold up a mirror to your internal world — your thoughts, emotions, patterns, and beliefs — so you can gain awareness. Awareness creates choice. Choice creates change.

I cannot do the work for you. But I will walk alongside you while you do it.

Therapy should not be endless. It should be purposeful. The goal is alignment — and then release — back into your life with clarity, ownership, and direction

Faith & Foundation

My faith became central to my work during graduate school. At first, I was cautious. I didn’t want to impose belief or violate ethical boundaries. But over time, I came to a conviction I could not ignore:

If healing is truly taking place, it is not coming from me.

Relationship is what wounds us. Relationship is also what heals us. But perfect relationship is found only in God — our Creator — who knows us fully, who acted to reconcile us, and who defines our value before we ever prove anything.

Outside of Him, healing can feel like a recurring dream — something we glimpse but cannot quite grasp. With Him, healing becomes grounded and real.

I cannot separate my counseling from my dependence on God. Not as pressure. Not as performance. But as honesty. I am not meant to carry the burden of healing. And neither are you.

Your actions reflect the condition of your heart, but they do not add to or subtract from your worth. When identity is anchored in the One who created you, clarity follows.
